When a Story Just Clicks
I didn’t plan to write a children’s poem. I was just thinking about one of those quiet days at the beach with my kids. It was the kind of day that stays with you. We built lopsided sandcastles, chased the foamy edges of the tide, and sat side by side watching the sky change colors. It was simple. It was everything.
Some stories come slow. This one didn’t. I opened my laptop, and the words just came. It felt more like remembering than writing. It was like the poem already existed, and I was just catching up to it.
I’ve written stories that took months. This one took an afternoon. I didn’t second-guess it. I didn’t overthink it. I just wrote what I felt. And somehow, it worked.
There is something special about those precious moments that get tucked away in memory. They often go unnoticed at the time, but later, they reveal themselves as the heart of a story worth telling. That afternoon on the beach was one of those moments for me.
The result is a poem called By the Sea. It’s gentle and soothing, written for children, but filled with memories that are deeply personal to me.
If you’d like to read it, it’s now up on this website, on the Microstories for Kids page, right alongside this mini blog. I hope you and the children in your life enjoy sharing it together.
More soon,
